What is a skin fungus?
As the name suggests, skin fungus (dermatomycosis), or fungal infection of the skin or its appendages (hair, nails), is an infection with fungi. Infection is possible from person to person, animal to human, as well as via contaminated objects, e.g. in swimming pools, fitness clubs etc.
It depends on the respective pathogen (often filamentous fungi (dermatophytes), yeast fungi (shoot fungi), moulds) which symptoms occur on which part of the body. Fungal diseases can affect certain areas of the body or spread over the whole body.
Fungal infections often begin with a reddening of the skin, in the further course of the disease the inflammatory skin areas begin to flake and often fade in their centre. Fungal infections are often accompanied by more or less severe itching, in severe cases pain occurs.
What types of fungus are there?
Among the most common fungal diseases of the skin are
- Athlete’s foot (Tinea pedis): Typically characterized by gray-white skin changes and cracks between the toes or on the sole of the foot.
- Hand fungus (Tinea manuum): Often begins with blisters that develop into round, scaly patches.
- Ringworm (Tinea corporis): Red, itchy patches of skin appear on the torso and limbs.
- Scalp fungus (Tinea capitis): Skin changes on the scalp are often accompanied by broken hairs and hair loss.
- Nail fungus (Onychomycosis or Tinea unguium): A typical progression involves the nail initially losing its shine, followed by discoloration and brittleness.
- Oral thrush (fungal infection of the oral mucosa): Typical signs include white patches on the cheek mucosa or tongue, along with inflammation of the surrounding tissue.
How is the treatment carried out?
