Hair and nails belong to the so-called skin appendages, the growth of which is predominantly controlled by hormones. Disruptions or irregularities in the hormone balance can therefore affect hair and nails and lead to undesirable changes. In addition to harmless reasons, changes to hair and nails can also indicate serious illnesses and should be clarified by a doctor.

Hair, hair loss

The hair follicles under the skin are responsible for the production of hair. From here, a healthy hair grows for about two to seven years, daily by about 0.35 millimetres. When the growth is finished, the hair is shed after some time, about 3 weeks, so that a new one can grow. There are between 90,000 and 150,000 hairs on the scalp, depending on the hair type. It is part of the natural process that between 60-100 of them fall out daily. This hair loss is therefore normal and therefore it is not always easy to predict when hair loss will become a cause for concern.

The line between “normal” and alarming hair loss is fluid. It is judged how much hair we lose, how easily and in which areas. If the hair loss is concentrated in individual hair areas, this can be an indication of serious hormonal imbalances or other diseases.

Age-related hair loss, PRP

Age-related hair loss, which is hereditary, is medically harmless, but for many people affected it is often a major cosmetic problem. The receding hairline in men as well as thinning hair in older women can scratch your self-esteem.

With PRP autohaemotherapy, in which the hair roots are treated with plasma extracted from the patient’s own blood, hair medicine has a possibility to stimulate hair growth in a natural way. PRP (platelet rich plasma), which is obtained by centrifugation and then injected into the hair roots, ensures that the hair roots are sufficiently nourished and stimulates hair growth. With this treatment, hair loss can be stopped permanently and the hair becomes thicker again.

Nails

If nails are brittle, soft, thin or splintery, this is often the result of a disturbed keratin formation of the nail. As with most changes in the hair, this disorder can have several reasons. Among the most common are a lack of minerals (calcium, silicic acid, etc.), hormonal changes, but also other underlying diseases that have not yet been identified, which is why a specialist examination by a dermatologist is recommended in the case of changes in the nails.

Ingrown nail

Incorrect nail cutting, tight shoes, a hereditary narrow nail bed, these are all possible causes for an ingrown toenail (Unguis incarnatus). When the nail presses on the nail bed, an inflammation often forms, which makes the tissue susceptible to the entry of bacteria. If the ingrown nail continues to press on the inflamed area, this often causes severe pain, which can only be treated by a dermatologist.
