Tattoo lightening
Preparation for the perfect cover up at Dermacare Vienna
Why is tattoo lightening important before a cover up?
A cover up tattoo is a great way to transform an old or unloved tattoo into a new work of art. However, it is not always easy to cover up an old tattoo, especially if it is dark or covers a large area.
In such cases, tattoo lightening by laser treatment can be the decisive step towards a successful cover-up.

Lightening a tattoo - when is it important?
The biggest challenge with a cover-up tattoo is that the new design often has to cover up the old tattoo. This can be particularly problematic with dark or heavily pigmented tattoos, as the old colour could show through the new design. Without tattoo lightening, the tattoo artist would often have to resort to even darker colours, which severely limits the design options. Another problem is that the new tattoo usually has to be larger and less detailed as a result.
By lightening the tattoo before the cover-up, the original motif is faded to such an extent that the tattoo artist has more freedom to create the new design. This means that finer details, brighter colours and an overall more artistic design are possible. Lightening therefore makes it possible to realise a cover-up more precisely and creatively.
More design options through tattoo lightening
Tattoo lightening not only helps to reduce old dark colours, but also creates a more “neutral” base for the new design. This is particularly important if the old tattoo has large, dark areas that could visually dominate the cover up. Lightening reduces these areas so that the tattoo artist can plan the new tattoo more freely without having to adhere to the restrictions of the old tattoo.
In other words, without lightening, the new tattoo would often have to be designed in such a way that it covers the old lines and colours. With a laser treatment for lightening, on the other hand, the artist can design the cover-up the way it was originally intended without making any compromises.
Tattoo lightening with the latest technology at Dermacare Vienna
Dermacare Vienna uses the PICOPLUS laser from Lutronic – the most advanced second-generation picosecond laser. This state-of-the-art system combines the advantages of picosecond and nanosecond technology and is therefore able to treat almost all tattoo colours effectively thanks to four different wavelengths (1064, 532, 595 and 660 nm). The PICOPLUS laser is characterised by particularly high performance and precision and enables optimal results in tattoo lightening.
Compared to conventional laser systems, the PICOPLUS laser requires around 30 % fewer sessions, as its shorter pulses and high power enable faster and more effective lightening of the pigments. In addition, this technology causes fewer thermal reactions in the tissue, which leads to faster healing and prepares the skin for a new cover-up more quickly after treatment.
Another advantage for patients: Laser treatment with the PICOPLUS is less painful than previous methods, which noticeably increases comfort during whitening. Dermacare Vienna thus offers an innovative, efficient and skin-friendly solution for anyone who wants to lighten their old tattoo and plan a new design.
Tattoo lightening guarantees problem-free cover-up
As you can see, tattoo lightening before a cover up is the key to a creative and aesthetically pleasing new tattoo. Lightening creates more scope for the tattoo artist so that the new design can completely cover the old one without being affected by dark colours or old lines.
